Prof Dr Norbert Scherbaum is the head of the Department for Addiction Medicine and Addictive Behaviour. In addition, he holds a professorship for clinical addiction research at the medical faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen and is also head of the local addiction research group.
Norbert Scherbaum has been a medical doctor since 1991, a lecturer in psychiatry since 2002, and Professor for clinical addiction research and Head of the department of Addiction Medicine and Addictive Behaviour since 2004. He is a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, psychiatry and psychotherapy in childhood and adolescence, and in addiction medicine. He is member of the Committee for Addictive Disorders of the Germany Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGPPN) and of the scientific committee of the German Centre of Addiction Issues (DHS). His main research topics include evaluation of drugs for the maintenance treatment of opiate addicts, comorbid psychiatric disorders in addiction, low-threshold services for drug addicts, and the genetic influence on the course of opiate withdrawal symptoms.
